Accessing memories and events
from our lives can be as easy as recalling memories of something
one might may have experienced even a few days ago, or a few years
ago. It is the emotions in the events that hold memories in our
minds. If you think of some experience in your life, you notice
that the ones that are emotionally intense or unique in some way
will be easier to remember than the ordinary everyday experiences.
Although
some people are simply curious about exploring previous events
from their lives, from a therapeutic and healing perspective, the
primary purpose of recalling any past experience is to help resolve
issues that may be creating blocks to living
one's life fully in the present.
From a therapeutic perspective, it really doesn't
matter if the past experience is considered "real" or "imaginary." If
you really think about it, what happened yesterday or even a year
ago in your life is no longer "real" in your present reality, it
exists only in your memory; however, since we are continually projecting
into the past and future for reference to respond to situations
in our current environment, that memory may still be exerting a
huge influence, empowering or crippling us in the present.

The value of reviewing and understanding the
experience is in the lessons and opportunity for learning it provides.
Once the memory is understood and whatever lesson is learned there
is no more need for such experience to repeat, however until the
lesson is learned, the experience will tend to repeat itself in
different forms.
